Belarus sanctions restructured ~20% of global trade

Belaruskali is the world's second-largest potash exporter. US/EU/UK sanctions since 2021 forced India and Brazil to redirect to Canadian supply. Payment and logistics restrictions remain, keeping structural risk premium elevated.

High
Q1 2027$487Q2 2027$491Q3 2026$482Q3 2027$496

Supply stress: chokepoint disruption (Hormuz/Red Sea), export restrictions, or demand surge from fertilizer restocking.

Central
Q1 2027$413Q2 2027$416Q3 2026$409Q3 2027$420

Base case: current supply-demand balance holds, no major disruption, seasonal demand patterns.

Low
Q1 2027$351Q2 2027$354Q3 2026$347Q3 2027$357

Demand softness: fertilizer affordability pressure, Chinese export quotas relaxed, new capacity ramps on schedule.

Supply / Demand Balance

The 2022 shock (Belarus sanctions + Russia-Ukraine war) removed ~20% of export capacity overnight. Prices spiked to $950/t before correcting sharply through 2023-24. Markets have partially stabilised at ~$405/t (Q1 2026). Canadian capacity absorbed the gap but tight rail capacity remains a structural constraint.

Supply Chain

Potash production is highly concentrated: Canada (Nutrien, Mosaic), Russia (Uralkali) and Belarus (Belaruskali) represent ~70% of global capacity. Sanctions on Belarus created a structural market realignment. New mines take 8–15 years and $3–5B to build.

Geopolitical Risk Matrix

Belarus is sanctioned by US/EU/UK following 2021 election crackdown. Belaruskali (state-owned) remains a major producer but faces logistics and payment restrictions. Russia continues exports under fertilizer sanctions exemption. Canada supply is geopolitically secure but infrastructure-constrained.
